Dear __________,

I’m in the ____________State. That is Florida’s nickname. The ____________ (noun) Parade celebrates
the legendary pirate Jose Gaspar and his mutinous krewe taking over the city of _______ in 1783. Gaspar’s
________ set sail for the Florida straits which lie________ (direction) of the Florida Keys to hide their
treasure of gold coins and jewels. In 1904, a Tampa Tribune newspaper editor based the theme of a Tampa
festival on the adventurous pirate Jose Gaspar. This ______(month), Ye Mystic Krewe of city leaders in full
pirate custom set sail from Tampa Bay to capture the mayor and take over the city for the day. In 1954, the
Jose Gaspar was the world’s first ______ ship ever to be commissioned to be built as a replica of the 18th
Century West Indiaman. Today, the Krewe throws gold _____
and countless ______ to everyone.  I can’t
wait to share with you.
Sincerely,
Liz Ebanks

TIP:  Consider using high contrast colors like bright yellow to highlight key phrases and keep students on engaged by implementing Universal Design.

  • The yellow is easily visible on a black background.
  • I often bold and ENLARGE TEXT to assist students with visual challenges.
  • Keep it Simple! Give your students space between each bulleted concept to assist them in reading comprehension.
  • Seize the opportunity to encourage discussion about Gasparilla Parade History during this project-based learning assignment.  Circulate throughout the classroom and guide the students conversations with this guided web page search on a community tradition.  Maintain student focus by integrating computers into the lesson to enhance learning skills.
